Description:
The imagery in this badge captures the operative presence of Airfield Operations Officers (13M) on the airfield, which is their primary working environment.
The airfield itself is depicted as a runway in use by the sweeping center form, similar to what a pilot would see on takeoff or landing, with solid inner lines as edge markings and a dashed runway centerline.
Three, bold triangles rise in unison from the lower central half of the runway to not only denote the aircraft dependent on Airfield Operations services, but also the three officer positions within the Airfield Operations Flight (AOF): Systems Officer, Director of Operations, and Flight Commander.
Aircraft represents the essence of the Air Force's mission in its entirety. The badge design is a depiction of how officers lead each career field in the Airfield Operations community.
Four stars line the runway in the same manner as runway edge lights and represent the four main sections typically established in an AOF: Airfield Management, Radar, Airfield, and Weather Systems, Air Traffic Control Tower, and Air Traffic Control Radar Approach Control.
The symbolism of stars not only encompasses the bright, guiding properties of airfield lighting, but also serves to highlight the aforementioned sections that power the airfield.
The runway raises up and fuses with the shape of a control tower cab, which often serves as a defining landmark on airfields around the world.
