Description:
Below is what AFSFA (AIR FORCE SECURITY FORCES ASSOCIATION) uncovered from their archives on the adoption of the term "Defensor Fortis" as the Security Forces motto.
CMSgt (ret) Daryl P. Janicki delivered a briefing on the origin of the flash and motto at the 2017 AFSFA National Meeting in Washington DC. The below information was part of his briefing.
"Defender" and "Defender of the Force" in English was decided upon first, a Latin version was desired, but was a challenge to translate in the exact meaning we intended.
Defender of the Force = (close translation) hanc declarationem defensor vis
*One of multiple possible translations - a mouthful to say and didn’t flow well
Fortis Defensor = Defender of the strong, mighty, firm, steadfast, brave, bold
*Could have worked, but could also mean, and be misinterpreted as “Strong Defense”
Defensor Fortis = Strong, mighty, firm, steadfast, brave, and bold Defender
*Defenders logically defend someone or something
Our strong, mighty, firm, steadfast, brave and bold Defenders defend “The Force”
Fortis is also the etymological root of the modern word force
